6. Jacob NAUDE (born
29 August, 1696)
Jacob NAUDE went to
Holland, and took service as a midshipman (adelbors) on the ship Abbekerk.
Germany at that time consisted
of a conglomeration of small states, left in a poor economic condition
by the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). Consequently, many Germans were
drawn West by the wealth of the Netherlands, finding employment with the
Dutch East India Company.
From a linguistic point of
view, there was not much difference between German and Dutch, especially
with regard to the regional dialects of the Lowlands. In addition, both
the Germans and the Dutch were Protestants.
Jacob arrived at the Cape in 1718. On arrival, he left the Company's
service and became a schoolteacher at Drakenstein.
Here he met the twice-widowed Susanne
TAILLEFERT, whom he was later to marry.
There are two
lines of Naudes in South Africa: one is descended from the
marriage of Jacob and Suzanne, and the second
from Phillip Jacob Naude
