From Jacob to Ouma Katie:

Back Home Next
Our Ouma Katie was a Naudè from both sides: her father Martiens and mother Polly were both Naudès. They were third cousins.

They were descended from two sons of Jacob Naudè (1723) and Anna Du Toit (1727):

     #  Martiens from Charel (1758) and
     #  Polly from his brother Stephanus (1749)

7. Jacob NAUDE (born 1 August 1723)

Jacob NAUDE and Susanne TAILLEFERT's only son JACOB, born 1 August 1723, was the seventh generation from the old wall builder Jean Nadel.

He married Anna Susanna du Toit, a daughter of Stephanus du Toit and Deborah Marais, on 11 October 1744 in Capetown. She was seventeen years old and he twenty-two.

They had eleven children. The third child was Stephanus = b. 15.4.1749, bapt. 25-5-1749
and the eighth was Carel = b. 3.10.1758, bapt. 22-10-1758. These two are our ancestors.

The Drakenstein Census of 1746 showed that Jacob at age 23 owned:

One son (Jacob, the eldest, born the previous year)
Two slaves
Three horses
One pistol
Sixteen chickens.

Amazing that his child was counted among his possessions! Why not his wife as well? Maybe a wife counted as one of the slaves. The two slaves must have had their hands full looking after one baby, three horses and sixteen chooks!

Jacob prospered: at his death, the date of which is uncertain, his estate included 2708 sheep, 11 horses, 23 oxen, 37 other cattle and 19 stud cattle. (No mention of wives or slaves!) The auction of his assets fetched 3534 riksdaalders.

Marthinus Casper NAUDE born 12 July 1854 Richmond, Cape
died 1934, Pretoria
married 1883 in Kimberley
Maria Magdalena (Polly) NAUDE born May 1855

Polly and Martiens NAUDE were married in Kimberley in 1883 and moved to the Transvaal soon after the proclamation of the Goldfields.

They occupied the first brick house erected in Johannesburg and after four years they moved to Pretoria. At that time Pretoria was a small country town with a scattering of houses.

They first lived in Boom Street, in the middle of the town. The town was so sparsely populated that they had very large grounds and their house resembled a farmhouse. Later they moved to 106 Celliers Street, where they were still living when Oupa Martiens died in 1934.

Their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1933 was celebrated with a big party, attended by their four daughters, nine grandchildren and many guests, including representatives of the newspapers. Oupa Martiens was a prominent figure in the community through his well-known market agency, from which he retired in 1933 after 46 years.

He died a year later, in 1934.

They had four daughters:

  1. the eldest was Catharina Susanna Elizabeth (Katie), born on  Christmas Day 1884.
  2. Her sister Muriel Magdalena Naudè was born 10.11.1887 at Johannesburg and died 3.7.1971 at Pretoria. She married François Johannes de Villiers( b.14.5.1884 at Beaconsfield, Kimberley)  on 6.6.1914 at Pretoria.
  3. Minnie Frances Naudè married Charles Spencer Hickman (b. 1883 in England) and died 25.3.1956 in the Middelburg hospital.
  4. The other sister, whose name we do not know, married a Dr J.H.C. Stead. Their daughter was an only child and married a Mr Cook. They had three sons, two of whom were named Brian and Colin. The Cooks emigrated to Canada in the 1960s.
